During an appearance on The Adam Schefter Podcast, Todd Bowles shared the moment he found out he would be replacing Bruce Arians as head coach of the Tampa Bay Bucs.
Arians told Bowles over the phone that he had something important to tell him in person, however, Bowles was in Charlotte and couldn’t see him face-to-face right away.
“I have a house in Charlotte, so I flew down to check on my house. When I got off the plane, I turned on my phone and had a message from Bruce that said to call him. He asked me where I was. I said I was in Charlotte to go check on my house. He said he wanted to tell me in person but I guess he can’t. He said he was stepping down and turning it over to me.”
“I was like, ‘What? You’re kidding me, right?’ It’s owners’ week, and we were kinda past all that stuff when jobs change.”
This isn’t Bowles’ first rodeo as he had a four-year run as head coach of the New York Jets. He went 24-40 with the franchise.
Now, that he has Tom Brady as a QB, he can fully expect to improve that record in 2022.
