The Tennesee Titans hosted free agent wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins this week, but they made a huge mistake that could end up costing them a deal with the former Arizona Cardinals star.
Hopkins was released by the Cards last month and is visiting teams as he searches for a new home. The Titans brought him in for talks this week and the meeting is said to have gone swimmingly, except for one thing.
According to Michael Lombardi, the Titans flew the wideout over on Southwest Airlines. Lombardi, who was speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, suggested that it’s simply not the route you want to go when trying to recruit a big-name player.
“I know Tennessee wined and dined him, Pat. They did a tremendous job,” he said. “The problem is, if you are wining and dining somebody, don’t fly ’em on Southwest. I think you gotta put ’em on a personal airplane.”
This has not been confirmed, but it does seem like something that would not fall under the category of best recruiting tactic. Hopkins remains one of the best WRs in the NFL so one would expect that he would be flown over in a private jet. But it appears that was not the case.
The Pro Bowler has also since visited the New England Patriots and it’s thought that they could reach an agreement soon.
