Earlier this week, Jimmy Garoppolo told reporters that he’s spoken with GM John Lynch and has discussed finding the “right destination” for him this offseason.
“We’ve talked a little bit, I think more will happen in the days to come but yeah these guys have been very upfront about the whole thing,” Garoppolo said, via NFL.com. “Was talking to John (Lynch) yesterday just about finding the right destination and whatever the future holds, just doing it the right way. Got a long career ahead of me so I’m excited about it, excited about the opportunities to come.
“I just want to go to a place where they want to win, that’s really what I’m in this game for. I’m here to play football, I’m here to win football games and as long as I got that and good people around me, I think the rest will take care of itself.”
According to a report from FanSided’s Matt Lombardo, there are three teams expected to make a “strong push” for the quarterback.
“One current personnel director tells FanSided the expectation inside the league is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Denver Broncos are expected to make a strong push to trade for Garoppolo.”
Since before the 2021 season, the expectation was that San Francisco trades the veteran this offseason as he enters the final year of his deal. The 49ers are headed into a new era after they gave up a massive trade package for the rights to select Trey Lance in the first round last April, and he’s expected to step into the starting job.
The 30-year-old is a former second-round pick of the Patriots back in 2014 who got traded to the 49ers in 2017.
