As an NFL quarterback, you should know that the last thing you ever want to do on a fourth down attempt is simply throw the ball away. Doing so will result in the opposing team getting the ball anyways. You’re better off putting up a prayer and giving your guys a shot to make a play, even if that pray is more likely to end in an interception than a completion.
This is the common sense approach to playing quarterback at any level, let alone in the NFL.
On Sunday, Jared Goff ditched the common sense approach for an embarrassing, effortless, mind-boggling approach on a key fourth down early in the game.
Facing a 4th & 4 from just inside the Cincinnati 40-yard line, Goff couldn’t find an open receiver, so he rolled out and threw the ball out of bounds, turning it over to the Bengals on downs.
We’re not saying Goff should have completed a pass for a first down on this play. But come on now! At least throw it up for one of your wideouts! No wonder Dan Campbell was calling him out after the Lions’ 34-11 loss.
