Tiffany & Co. vice president Oscar Riedener was the only one to approach the NFL about designing it. Despite knowing little about football, the Swiss-born Riedener delivered a winning concept.
Before meeting Rozelle, Riedener bought a football from FAO Schwartz and spent hours studying it. One morning, while eating breakfast, inspiration struck. He cut up a Cornflakes box to form the base for a design that would hold the football upright. When he met Rozelle, Riedener sketched his idea on a cocktail napkin. Rozelle approved the design, and remarkably, it has remained unchanged ever since.
The trophy, initially named the “World Championship Game Trophy,” debuted in 1967. It was presented to Vince Lombardi and the Green Bay Packers, who defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in what we now call Super Bowl I.

Tiffany & Co.’s skilled silversmiths meticulously craft the trophy in their Rhode Island workshop, a process that takes four months and requires 72 hours of labor.

Originally produced in New Jersey, the trophy’s production moved to Tiffany’s Rhode Island facility in 2017. While winning the Super Bowl Trophy is often described as “priceless,” it costs approximately $50,000 to create each one.

Do Players Get Their Own Super Bowl Lombardi Trophy?

The entire set of rings for the team reportedly cost around $5 million.
