Just hours after the New York Giants selected Corey Ballentine in the NFL Draft, he and his friend decided to celebrate by attending a party that wasn’t too far from where they lived. It was a decision that would change both of their lives after shots rang out.
Ballentine has since been released from the hospital, but his best pal and teammate Dwane Simmons, was killed during that shooting.
Now, we finally have the reasoning for why this happened and it was just as senseless as many thought it was from the beginning.
Ballentine and his college roommate were asked if they had some weed by strangers, and when they said no, they were shot, the slain victim’s father said Monday.
“[The] Washburn women’s soccer team was having a party,” Simmons’ dad, Navarro, told local KSHB-TV. “It was in walking distance” to the two young men’s home.
“They walked over, you know, had a good time. They were leaving. Some guys rolled up, asked them if they had some smoke for sale. Dwane and Corey said no, and [the men] just drove off and came back around and opened fire.”
The dad said Ballentine told him that the pair had never seen the men before.
“Dozens” of people were said to be at the party as detectives were “working leads” and interviewing witnesses but had no suspects.

Ballentine, who took a bullet to his backside, called called Simmons’ father after the shooting.
“I was like, ‘Hey, Corey, congratulations!’ and this and that,” Navarro told KSHB. “Then, when he said, ‘No, Mr. Simmons, it’s not good. We’ve been shot,’ I just, like my heart just dropped.”
Giants General Manager Dave Gettleman said the cornerback is expected to be at the team’s rookie minicamp when it gets underway on Thursday.
