This year’s second-overall NFL Draft pick Will Anderson Jr. is already set for a positional change after making it to the pros.
The Houston Texans took the linebacker off the board as soon as they could, returning for quarterback C.J. Stroud right away as they agreed to a trade for the third-overall pick with the Arizona Cardinals.
The Texans have announced Anderson is transitioning to a defensive end and the player claims to be very excited about the change.
“I’m very excited, however they want to use me, it’s just going to be anything I kind of did at Alabama,” he remarked. “So I’m super excited, but just to do anything they need from me for the team.”
DeMeco Ryans Expects Anderson To Excele In His New Position
Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans has experience in that department, having moved to middle linebacker in the NFL after playing as an outside linebacker in college. Ryans, who took over as the Texans this season after stints as a linebackers coach and defensive coordinator with the San Franciso 49ers, expects Will to slot into his new position seamlessly.
“It’s not a huge position change for Will,” the new HC was quoted as saying. “Will will be an edge defender for us, and that’s what he did at Alabama. Mostly at Alabama, he was standing up. We’ll have him down in a three-point stance.
“It’s not a big-time position change for him. We won’t have him playing over the guard like he did some there later in his career, so it’s not a huge position change for Will.”

Anderson added he’s already used to playing as a DE as he has been involved in similar roles from the time he was in high school. He became a versatile and well-rounded defender in Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide setup.
The team’s rookie minicamp ended this Saturday, with OTAs set to begin on May 22.
