Lovie Smith is no longer part of the Houston Texans’ organization, but plenty of fans were sure to give him a shout-out on Sunday afternoon.
The Texans upset the New Orleans Saints 20-13 on Sunday to move to 3-3 on the young season. Quarterback C.J. Stroud had another solid outing, throwing for 199 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the victory.
You may recall that Smith spoiled the Texans’ chances of getting the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft in Week 18 of last season. Rather than kick an extra point late in their game against the Indianapolis Colts, Smith called for a two-point conversion that succeeded.
With the 32-31 victory, the Texans lost out on the first overall pick, which went to the Chicago Bears. That pick was traded to the Carolina Panthers, who used the selection on Alabama QB Bryce Young.
Houston held the No. 2 pick and selected Stroud, who has been far-and-away the best rookie quarterback in 2023 so far. Hence why so many Texans fans were thanking Smith for his hand in helping the team get Stroud:

Smith was fired by the Texans after the 2022 season. Many believe that he simply went for the two-point conversion for a savvy act of revenge on Houston owners before he was let go.
With the way Stroud has performed up to this point, Houston fans certainly have every reason to be especially thankful for Smith.
