The 2023 NFL Draft is less than a month away, and the Houston Texans are expected to select a quarterback second overall, or that it was everybody assumed they would do.
After trading Deshaun Watson to Cleveland last offseason, the Texans hold two first-round picks in this year’s draft (Nos. 2 and 12) and in 2024.
Per NFL Network’s James Palmer, Houston is eyeing Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud with the pick.
“The Texans have the mindset right now of, let’s see who gets picked at No. 1, and we’ll take the other guy,” Palmer said. “Because both of them check a lot of boxes.”
According to Palmer, many evaluators around the league consider Young and Stroud a “1A and 1B” at quarterback is no particular other.
It’s quite obvious that the Texans will take a QB. Aside from the shock factor, Houston skipping out on a quarterback second overall would carry massive implications for the entire draft as many would be changing their top target almost immediately.

The Cardinals hold the third pick in the draft, and without a need for a quarterback, there was already speculation that they could trade down. If no trade, the Colts are expected to take the next QB in the draft.
Hopefully, things go much better for the Texans this time around. In 2002, the Texans selected QB David Carr as their first pick in franchise history, and he had no chance to succeed primarily because of a terrible supporting cast. He was sacked 249 times in five seasons with the Texans.
Watson was selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans, but we saw how his tenure ended as he was accused of sexual misconduct and assault by 20+ women. He has since been traded to the Cleveland Browns.
Anything is possible, but Houston taking a quarterback at No. 2 overall is still expected.
