One of the biggest names remaining on the NFL free agent market has finally landed with a new team.
Per Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the Detroit Lions are signing veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. The 30-year-old spent the 2022 season with the Miami Dolphins as a backup to Tua Tagovailoa.
Bridgewater will open the season as a backup to starting QB Jared Goff. Of course, Dan Campbell and company could very well turn to Bridgewater if Goff struggles with consistency, especially with expectations in Motor City higher than previous years.
Bridgewater was the Minnesota Vikings’ main starting quarterback in 2015 and 2016, and the Carolina Panthers’ QB1 in the 2020 campaign. He has spent the majority of his career as a backup, making 65 total starts (a 33-32-0) record.
Known for being an effective game manager, Bridgewater has completed 66.4 percent of pass attempts for 15,120 yards and 75 touchdowns against 47 interceptions. He appeared in five games for Miami last season, completing 62.0 percent of pass attempts for 683 yards, four touchdowns and as many interceptions.
