The San Francisco 49ers have made a series of roster cuts as they try to trim down to their final 53-man team. One of the more notable roster moves? The release of a former Dallas Cowboys’ first-round pick.
Per a report from Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, the 49ers released veteran defensive end Taco Charlton from the injured reserve, with the two sides reaching an injury settlement.
The Cowboys drafted Charlton in the first round (28th overall) back in 2017. From 2010 to 2021, only two of Jerry Jones’ first-round picks failed to make a single Pro Bowl: Charlton and 2012 first-rounder and cornerback Morris Claiborne.
Charlton lasted just two seasons in Dallas, appearing in 27 games (seven starts). He tallied four total sacks (three of them coming in his rookie year) before moving on to the Miami Dolphins in 2019.
That year, Charlton posted a career-high five sacks with two forced fumbles in just 10 games. In a bit of a surprise, the Dolphins decided not to retain Charlton despite his career year, and he went on to join the Kansas City Chiefs.

Charlton spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears, respectively. For his career, the Michigan product has 11.5 sacks and four forced fumbles in 60 game appearances.
The 49ers will open their 2023 season with a road contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 10 at 1:00 p.m. EST.
