Things just got that much more interesting in the race for Sean Payton.
The former New Orleans Saints head coach is probably the most intriguing name on the coaching market right now. After stepping away for a year, it appears as though the former Super Bowl champion is ready to return to the NFL sidelines.
The big question is not “if” Sean Payton will return, but “where” he’ll return, as he has already booked several interviews. The Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals are among the list of teams who have either met or are scheduled to meet with Payton, with the Broncos believed to be the front-runners at the moment.
According to the latest reports, the Broncos have already booked a second interview with Payton, who is believed to have interest in joining Russell Wilson’s squad…
However(!!!), there is apparently one team that is still lurking around with the hopes of possibly jumping into the fray and snatching Payton out from under the rest of his suitors.
According to ESPN’s Dianna Russini, there is “a team waiting in the wings watching all of this and could make a move if they get ‘their ducks in a row.'”

There are only so many head coaching vacancies in the NFL right now, with the Colts being the only one that hasn’t requested an interview with Payton at the moment. Could Russini be talking about them?
Or perhaps she’s talking about another team that could consider a coaching change in order to bring in Sean Payton…
Some like, say, the Dallas Cowboys? Jerry Jones seemed to confirm that Mike McCarthy was still their guy, but could he have something in the works behind the scenes? Perhaps he’s waiting to confirm that Payton would join the Cowboys before starting something in the media that might strain the organization’s relationship with McCarthy?
There’s the possibility of the Los Angeles Chargers second-guessing whether Brandon Staley is their guy? There were rumblings late in the season that Payton would prefer joining Justin Herbert and the Bolts. Maybe they decide to fire Staley after all, in order to make way for Payton’s arrival in L.A.
This latest report has definitely caused a stir on Twitter, with NFL fans tossing around their predictions as to who this mystery team might be:
Cowboys, Chargers, Colts, Dolphins…Bears?
Could Payton be headed to any one of these teams? We’ll find out soon enough.
