Former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick reportedly had interest from a surprise NFC team following his departure from a job he held for 24 years.
Belichick was thought to be a shoo-in for the Atlanta Falcons before they about-faced and hired Raheem Morris. That he still hasn’t been appointed as an HC anywhere suggests that the reports claiming there was little interest outside of Atlanta were true; yet, according to Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard, the Eagles considered making a move for the six-time Super Bowl winner.
Speaking on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Felger & Mazz, Bedard said he heard the former NFC champions had Belichick down as an option should things not work out with Nick Sirianni.
“Probably the most interesting thing that I’ve heard, and again this is just Senior Bowl rumor mill, is that the Eagles were very interested in Belichick if things didn’t work out with Nick Sirianni and they could be at the front of the line if things again go poorly for him next year,” he said, per Bleacher Report.
“Didn’t things not work out with Nick Sirianni?” co-host Michael Felger asked. “Like, what does that mean? They got blown out in the first round.”
“Yes, but you know, similar to Doug Pederson, like Doug Pederson was coming back until he had that postseason meeting with Howie [Roseman] and Jeffrey Lurie and they wanted Doug Pederson to do certain things, fire certain people and he wouldn’t do it so he got fired,” Bedard explained. “Apparently Nick Sirianni was amenable to all that stuff, so they decided for one more year that they’re going to keep him.”
Sirianni expects to have a better 2024 with the Eagles as he has brought in two new coordinators, replacing Sean Desai with Vic Fangio and Brian Johnson with Kellen Moore. It appears Belichick will still be an option for the top brass should he coach another failed campaign.
