An intriguing AFC team has been mentioned as the best fit for former Dallas Cowboys star wide receiver Michael Gallup.
Last month, the Cowboys released Michael Gallup in a cash-saving move that cleared a valuable $9.5 million against the salary cap. More than three weeks after the free agent market opened, Gallup remains a free agent as the draft inches closer.
Dallas Robinson of Pro Football Network offered the “best fit” for some of the top remaining free agents. There, Robinson made the case for the Pittsburgh Steelers to take a chance on the 6-foot-1 wideout:
“The Steelers traded WR Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers earlier this month, leaving them with George Pickens and a host of question marks on their wideout depth chart. Pittsburgh has signed Van Jefferson and Quez Watkins, neither of whom is an inspiring choice as a starting wide receiver.
Michael Gallup hasn’t been the same player since tearing his ACL in 2022 but has a 1,000-yard campaign (2019) on his ledger. The 6’1″, 200-pounder can give the Steelers more size on the perimeter and wouldn’t prevent them from drafting an early-round WR. Gallup has drawn free agent interest from the Panthers and Ravens since being released by the Dallas Cowboys in early March.”
The Steelers have been one of the busiest teams this offseason, moving on from quarterbacks Kenny Pickett (traded to the Philadelphia Eagles), Mason Rudolph (signed with the Tennessee Titans) and Mitch Trubisky (released before signing with the Buffalo Bills).
GM Omar Khan brought in Russell Wilson and Kyle Allen via free agency and acquired former first-round pick Justin Fields in a trade with the Chicago Bears.

Gallup suited up for all 17 of the Cowboys’ game last season, finishing with 34 receptions, a career-low 418 yards and two touchdowns.
Michael Gallup Can Still Be A Playmaker
Unfortunately, injuries have prevented Michael Gallup from regaining the star-like form we saw during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. He’s been limited to 40 games over the last three years, and it allowed other pass-catchers like CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks and the long-departed Dalton Schultz to produce more.
But the Steelers certainly need wide receiver help after trading Diontae Johnson. The passing game was an issue last year even with the dynamic receiving duo of Johnson and George Pickens, so Gallup definitely makes sense as an option for Pittsburgh.
Gallup had his best season in 2019 as the No. 2 receiver behind Amari Cooper, compiling 59 receptions for 1,107 yards and eight touchdowns. If he stays healthy and finds the right team, perhaps Gallup will be able to produce that star-like form again.
