As we all know by now, the Super Bowl is about more than just the game itself.
First and foremost, there’s the halftime show, which always gets a ton of attention. But that’s not all. There’s also the commercials, the national anthem, the coin flip, the pregame festivities…
And, of course, the flyover.
The flyover during the national anthem has been a trademark of the big game for quite some time, but this year’s version will offer something we’ve never seen before: An all-female crew.
According to reports, the flyover will feature four female pilots flying over State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, in a diamond formation. The all-female crew will honor 50 years of women flying in the Navy, after the first eight women began flight school in Pensacola, Florida back in 1973.
Seven women will be tasked with flying the four aircraft: Lt. Arielle Ash and Lt. Caitie Perkowski will pilot the two F/A-18F Super Hornets, with the help of weapon systems officers Lt. Saree Moreno and Lt. Naomi Ngalle; Lt. Margaret Dente will pilot the EA 18G Growler with electronic warfare officer Lt. Lyndsay Evans; and Lt. Suzelle Thomas will pilot the F-35C Lightning II.

Via CNN:
Sunday’s flyover will be comprised of two F/A-18F Super Hornets from the “Flying Eagles” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 122, an F-35C Lightning II from the “Argonauts” of VFA-147, and an EA-18G Growler from the “Vikings” of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 129.
According to the US Navy: “These aircraft represent the strike and electronic attack capability of the ‘Carrier Air Wing of the Future,’ providing advanced technology and enhanced flexibility to our military combatant commanders.”
The flyover will take place during the national anthem, prior to the big game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. This year’s anthem will be performed by country music star and 8-time Grammy winner Chris Stapleton.
