Colin Kaepernick has been mentioned as a possible target for a struggling NFC team in desperate need of quarterback help.
The New York Giants lost starter Daniel Jones for the season in Week 9 with a torn ACL. Backup Tyrod Taylor is still sidelined with a rib injury, forcing the team to start undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito in its past two games.
Dan Benton of the Giants Wire website from USA Today recently listed eight possible QB targets for the NFC East club. One of those teams was Kaepernick, who last played for the San Francisco 49ers in 2016:
“Some may scoff at this but Colin Kaepernick still maintains that he’d like to play in the NFL — ideally as a starter. He claims to be practicing every day and just waiting for that phone to ring, so why not?
The Giants wouldn’t allow DeVito to throw on Sunday and if they’re down and out that bad, could Kap really be worse? The 35-year-old Kaepernick hasn’t thrown an NFL pass since 2016 but can beggars really be choosers?”
Kaepernick was released by the 49ers after the 2016 season. No NFL team wound up signing Kaepernick, who later sued the league by alleging that owners had colluded to keep him out of the league. The parties reached a settlement in Feb. 2019.
The former dual-threat star led the 49ers to a Super Bowl 47 appearance as well as a trip to the 2013 NFC Championship Game.
