BYU Cougars football and San Francisco 49ers legend Steve Young did not stay out of a job for very long after ESPN parted ways with him amid massive layoffs.
Steve Young will be a football coach this fall, but at a different level.
Young accepted a job as an assistant coach for Menlo School’s girls flag football team. He’ll work with another former 49ers signal-caller, John Paye.
“Flag football will be a wonderful opportunity for young women to show their talent,” Young said in a statement. “Football is a great team game that teaches tremendous life lessons. I want to help build women’s flag football.”
The announcement said that Young, who was recently part of a large layoff at ESPN after more than 20 years as an analyst, “will serve as an assistant coach-guest lecturer-type,” and his two daughters — a senior and a freshman — will be on the team.
John Paye played with Young on the 49ers from 1987-1989 and has been a longtime coach at the school.

According to an announcement earlier this year, the 49ers played an important role in helping flag football become a sanctioned sport in California for this season. The season is set to start in mid-August and will run through early November.
Young played in the NFL for 15 seasons, 13 of them with the 49ers. The former BYU star won three Super Bowls in San Francisco and was named the Super Bowl MVP in the 1994 season after beating the San Diego Chargers.
Young was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005.
Young was a fixture on ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown since 2006 before his layoff.
