Lamar Jackson is a special talent in the NFL, and Steve Young can see his potential being wasted with the Ravens. On Friday, legendary Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young made arguably the boldest take yet on his potential.
Appearing on ESPN Monday Night Countdown, Young argued that while the Ravens have turned their running game into one of the most sophisticated in the NFL, they’ve sacrificied their passing game as a reult.
“Until he gets the chance to show that he is a sophisticated passer of the football in a sophisticated passing game… they don’t ask of it, they don’t teach it and then you ask ‘Why isn’t he getting paid like Patrick Mahomes?’ Because they haven’t given him a chance to be Patrick Mahomes. So until they do, Lamar Jackson is damned because of what the RAVENS are doing, not because of Lamar Jackson…” Young said.
He also stated Jackson could be “the greatest player in the history of the game” if the Ravens implemented a sophisticated pass game.
“I can’t wait for someone to train Lamar Jackson in a sophisticated passing game. I think he’d be the greatest player in the history of the game,” Young said. “But he keeps getting held back by the Ravens year after year because they keep doubling down on this [rushing] thing Lamar Jackson is great at.”
“I want the full measure of who Lamar Jackson is, and it’s not being brought forward by the Ravens,” Young added.

Jackson is entering the final year of his rookie contract with the Ravens organization. As the start of the 2022 season quickly approaches, it appears the two sides will not get a deal done once again.
Jackson has been in the NFL for four years and has already built a decent resume for himself. In just his second year, Jackson won NFL MVP, after throwing for 36 touchdowns.
