After leading his Georgia Bulldogs to a second consecutive national championship this season with a blowout win over the TCU Horned Frogs, Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennet IV should’ve been riding high as he made his way to the NFL Draft.
Unfortunately, his name began trending for all the wrong reasons as he was arrested in Dallas for public intoxication after police responded to a call of him banging on the doors of an apartment complex.
Police determined he was so intoxicated that he would be in danger if not arrested.
It took until the NFL combine for Bennett to finally address the matter during his press conference on Friday.
“It was a mistake that everybody’s aware of,” Bennett said, via ProFootballTalk. “I understand why that can’t happen. I’ve talked to coaches about it, talked to GM’s. I’ve apologized to my family. That’s who I felt worse about; I felt like I let them down, because no matter where I go now [people are going to know about it]. Even without all this, I’ve got an obligation. I’m the fourth [Stetson Bennett]. You can’t do that if your last name is Bennett. I know better.”
Despite his success in college, Bennett is not considered one of the top quarterbacks in the upcoming NFL Draft, so his mistake might prove to be very costly.
