Last month, the Dallas Cowboys took one step in the right direction when they inked DeMarcus Lawrence to a massive 5-year, $105 million deal with $65 million guaranteed.
If the team really wants to cement themselves as a viable Super Bowl contender, they will definitely need to get ready to sign Ezekiel Elliott to a massive contract as well.
Stephen Jones recently spoke about the contract talks between the two sides, or rather the lack of talks and it should really worry the Dallas Cowboys fan base.
“He’s the straw, if you will, that stirs our drink. He’s a key part of what we’re about,” Jones said on the “Pro Football Talk Live” podcast on Thursday. “Certainly, he’s a priority in terms of ultimately getting him signed. But there hasn’t really been a timetable put on this.”
Elliott’s rookie deal expires after the 2020 season and the team could very well slap the franchise tag on him before having to make that big decision to break the bank.
“When you talk about a guy that’s been productive and produced and handles the ball almost 60, 70 percent of the time for your offense and produced the way Le’Veon Bell was able to produce and the way Ezekiel Elliott produces for the Dallas Cowboys in all facets of the game, how in the heck can he not be worth the money?” Emmitt Smith said to Jean-Jacques Taylor of ESPN Dallas 103.3.
