Given the team had home-field advantage through the first two rounds with the best offense, the Dallas Cowboys were left stunned.
Mike McCarthy’s playoff failures may ultimately prove to be his undoing in Dallas as he was all anybody talked about after his latest failure.
Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett watched his former team and successor Mike McCarthy suffer a 48-32 loss to the Green Bay Packers and suggested that something is coming regarding the change to the team’s structure.
“They’re going to have some internal discussions,” Garrett said. “What changes do we need to make? I don’t know what those are, but something’s coming.”
During Monday’s First Take, Stephen A. Smith explained why he thinks McCarthy “has to go” following a first-round elimination.
“It’s not just about the 12 wins during the regular season and then you wet the bed in the postseason,” Smith said. “It’s about the fact that Jerry Jones is 81 years of age. It’s about the fact that when you look at the personnel on the Dallas Cowboys, we expect better come postseason time. It’s about the mandate that you took the job knowing that the mandate existed, and you failed to live up to it for four years.”

McCarthy is 42-25 in four seasons with the Cowboys and the team has reeled off three straight 12-win seasons but is 1-3 in the postseason under McCarthy.
McCarthy has one year remaining on his contract. It is unlikely he will survive the offseason with Bill Belichick, Pete Carroll, and Mike Vrabel being the three highest-profile names who were ousted from their respective NFL posts.
The wild card could be Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, who is expected to explore NFL opportunities after leading the Wolverines to a national championship.
