There’s been a lot of talk over Eric Bieniemy’s failure to land a head coaching job following the Kansas City Chiefs’ successful season.
Bieniemy has done a remarkable job as the Chiefs offensive coordinator since joining the team in 2018 and some credit him with Sunday’s big win. So questions are being raised over his inability to get the top job, especially in the wake of both Philadelphia Eagles coordinators being appointed with little deliberation.
According to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, Andy Reaid is to blame for Bieniemy missing out on a head coaching role for yet another offseason.
“Andy Reid has cost Eric Bieniemy a head coaching job in the National Football League,” Smith declared this week.
“Even though you’re the head, you don’t have to call plays, you chose to. Andy Reid not only called some plays, he made sure we knew he called plays. The NFL community knew he called plays.
“There’s plenty of head coaches in the league that have offensive coordinators who call plays.”

It’s really not fair to place the blame on Reid here – and Smith does admit it’s not really the right word as Reid’s done nothing deliberately. The Chiefs are all the better for having him as their head coach and Bieniemy as their OC. Why would he want to break that up? What he’s been accused of is also the reason the Chiefs have been as good as they have.
Despite the above, Reid has said that he would love to see the 53-year-old get to run the show somewhere.
“Eric Bieniemy has been tremendous for us and I think he’s tremendous for the National Football League,” Reid said, per Tod Palmer of KSHB. “I’m hoping he has an opportunity to go somewhere and do his thing, where he can run the show and be Eric Bieniemy.”
Bieniemy was interviewed by the Indianapolis Colts this year but they’ve since hired former Eagles OC Shane Steichen.
