An intriguing blockbuster trade proposal has the Pittsburgh Steelers upgrading the quarterback position by trading for a former first-round pick.
The Steelers used three different quarterbacks last season in Kenny Pickett, Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph. The latter led Pittsburgh to three straight wins to finish 10-7 and qualify for the postseason, but the Buffalo Bills made easy work of them in the Wild Card Round.
Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon proposed the idea of the Steelers acquiring Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields. Many expect the Bears to trade the 2021 first-round pick and use the top selection in this year’s draft on USC’s Caleb Williams:
“We just described Justin Fields, who at 24 is a phenomenal young athlete with the ability to become a star but may have worn out his welcome after three years of limited improvement as a passer in Chicago.
If the Bears decide to go down a new quarterback path with the top pick in the draft, they could very well decide to deal Fields out of the conference to a Steelers team that has little reason not to give him a shot.”
Fields had his best season yet in 2023, throwing for 2,562 yards and 16 touchdowns against nine interceptions in 13 games. The former Ohio State standout also had 657 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns.
He would unquestionably be an upgrade over any of the quarterbacks Pittsburgh has used since 2019. But will they actually get aggressive and make a move for the budding star? That remains to be seen, but it makes sense on paper.
