Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens has explained his reason for not making a crucial block for one of his teammates during Saturday’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
The wideout has been treated to lots of stick online following his failure to block for running back Jaylen Warren near the end zone on one particular play. While that one moment did not cost the Steelers a win as they were blown out 30-13, fans were not happy to see him standing idly by while one of his teammates was stopped just short of a touchdown.
Pickens spoke to reporters on Tuesday and referenced the recent situation with Houston Texans WR Tank Dell, explaining he didn’t want to sustain a similar injury.
“I was just trying to prevent the Tank Dell situation, the same thing that happened to (him). I ain’t want to get an injury. When you stay on the block too low, you can get ran up on very easily,” he said.
The Texans rookie suffered a broken left fibula after attempting to make a block against the Denver Broncos earlier this month. While the circumstances weren’t the same, that he didn’t want to put himself in harm’s way is perhaps understandable.

There are plenty of receivers around the league who will take such risks; it doesn’t appear that Pickens wants to be one of them.
