The Pittsburgh Steelers’ have cut two wide receivers from their roster, including one of the XFL’s top performers of the 2023 season.
On Monday, the club announced that they have waived Hakeem Butler and Cody White while signing fellow pass-catcher Aron Cruickshank and linebacker Kuony Deng. The Steelers signed Butler back in May, and White had been on the club’s roster since 2020.
Butler led all XFL players with eight touchdown receptions this past season, and he had the second-most receptions (51) and receiving yards (599). Only Jahcour Pearson of the Seattle Sea Dragons finished with more than Butler (60 receptions and 670 yards).
The Arizona Cardinals drafted Butler in the fourth round (103rd overall) back in 2019. Unfortunately, he had to miss his entire rookie season with a broken hand. Butler played two games for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020 but never recorded a catch.
A former standout at Michigan State, White went undrafted before signing with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020. He later landed on the New York Giants’ and Denver Broncos’ rosters but never played a game for eiter club.
Pittsburgh’s receiving corps is led by star Diontae Johnson and second-year product George Pickens, whom many expect to break out this year. The Steelers finished 9-8 last season and only missed out on the postseason because of a tiebreaker to the Miami Dolphins.
