One of the top storylines in football right now is the future of legendary New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who may or may not perform his final curtain call with the organization on Sunday.
The Patriots will wrap up their 2023 season against the New York Jets at Gillette Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Afterwards, all eyes will immediately shift on Belichick and owner Robert Kraft, who must decide on the future of the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach.
Based on a new bombshell report from Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald (h/t Jerry Thornton of Barstool Sports), however, it sounds like Belichick will indeed be out of New England after this season.
This massive report outlines the events that led up to the dysfunctional season for this once-proud franchise. Callahan and Kyed spoke to multiple sources within the organization for their scathing takes on Belichick.
According to the report, Belichick wanted to keep Matt Patricia as his offensive coordinator, but Kraft forced his coach to make some changes. Bill O’Brien was brought back as the club’s OC.
The report states that offensive line coach Adrian Klemm even confronted executive Matt Groh about the lack of talent at the position:
“Outside the front office, a few staffers privately pointed fingers back at decision-makers about the talent available. That is, save for Klemm, who confronted director of player personnel Matt Groh early in the season in a loud exchange that reverberated through the organization. Klemm, according to sources, didn’t feel heard, while some offensive veterans didn’t want to believe their eyes.”

As for O’Brien, it was stated that some believe he wanted to “wanted to clean house and build his own offensive staff,” but Belichick wouldn’t allow it. This apparently led to increased frustration for O’Brien:
“O’Brien’s frustration with the wide receivers and offensive line coaches began bubbling as soon as the late spring. Both position groups feature underdeveloped high draft picks and rank among the league’s worst units. …
Members of the front office shared O’Brien’s frustration with the lack of development as the season wore on.”
One team source also told Callahan and Kyed, “The staff dynamic is completely f—ed.”
Well, all of this dysfunction and drama would explain why the Patriots have already endured their worst season of the Belichick era. It’s awfully evident that the organization needs a major overhaul more than ever, with or without Belichick.
