A two-time Super Bowl-winning champion running back has decided to call it quits after a five-year career.
Per Los Angeles Rams’ senior staff writer Stu Jackson, running back Sony Michel informed head coach Sean McVay that he’s retiring at the age of 28. McVay informed reporters of Michel’s decision on Saturday.
The Georgia product spent the 2022 season with the Los Angeles Chargers, finishing with 106 rushing yards on 36 carries. He returned to the Rams (where he spent the 2021 season) last month before ultimately deciding to walk away.
Michel was a 2018 first-round draft choice of the New England Patriots. He was a vital member of their Super Bowl 53 championship team, rushing for 931 yards and six touchdowns despite missing three games.
In the postseason, Michel racked up 336 rushing yards and a whopping six touchdowns. He scored the lone touchdown in the Patriots’ Super Bowl victory over the Rams, the team Michel would win his second ring with three years later.

With Michel retiring, the Rams’ depth chart consists of Cam Akers, Kyren Williams, Zach Evans and Ronnie Rivers. Of course, there’s a chance McVay and company will look to add another veteran RB with Michel retiring.
The 5-foot-11, 215-pound Michel retires with 3,432 rushing yards, 18 rushing touchdowns and 56 receptions for 439 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns.
