Ever since the Los Angeles Rams fired Jeff Fisher and hired Sean McVay as their new head coach prior to the 2017 season, Rams punter Johnny Hekker has seen his workload decrease quite significantly.
During Fisher’s final two years with the Rams, in 2015 and 2016, Hekker recorded 96 and 98 punts in each of those seasons, respectively. Then, when McVay took over in 2017, Hekker’s punt total plummeted to 65. And in 2018, the Rams punter booted a career-low 43 punts while playing behind one of the league’s most dominant offenses.
Sure, most NFL players probably don’t like to see their workload decrease, but Hekker’s an obvious exception, seeing as how his drop in punt attempts has been met with consecutive playoff appearances and a trip to Super Bowl 53.
So with all that being said, while Sean McVay’s presence has probably made Hekker at least somewhat less valuable to the Rams, I’m quite sure the 4-time Pro Bowl punter isn’t exactly missing Jeff Fisher these days…
But that didn’t stop one reporter from asking that question anyway during Super Bowl Opening Night:
No word on how Hekker answered the question, but we do know that the person responsible for asking it has zero regrets:
