The Browns haven’t hosted the AFC Championship Game since 1986. That game is burned into the minds of long-suffering Cleveland fans, who watched John Elway and the Denver Broncos break their hearts with a 23-20 victory in overtime.
Cleveland met Elway’s Broncos again in the 1987 and 1989 AFC Championship Games in the Mile High City, with the Broncos emerging victorious in both contests.
Thanks to Joe Flacco’s dazzling play since signing with the Browns, Kevin Stefanski’s group is 8-5 and in good position to lock down a playoff berth in the crowded AFC. Of course, the odds of the Browns actually hosting the AFC Championship are awfully low.
Cleveland is two games behind the Baltimore Ravens (10-3) for the AFC North as well as the conference’s top seed. The Browns are likely to be a wild card team, and they wouldn’t host the AFC title game unless another wild card club won two road playoff games.
