Refs in the National Football League are starting to insert themselves more and more into the game and it is really starting to have an effect on the outcome of these contests.
Washington Football Team fans are irate this week after a ref called one of the worst “roughing the passer” penalties we have ever seen. It happened on a play where Chase Young simply grazed Falcons QB Matt Ryan. Despite the fact that the contact was minor, Young was flagged for a 15-yard penalty on the play.
The play occurred on fourth down. The result of the play was a Matt Ryan sack. But the roughing the passer penalty gave the Falcons a fresh set of downs from the Washington 27-yard line. Atlanta would make the most of their second chance by punching the ball into the end zone a few plays later.
If a defensive lineman can’t even do this to an opposing quarterback — a gentle shove in the chest while he still has the ball — then I’m not sure what they’re supposed to do. We may as well just give these quarterback flag to wear around their waist. It really is getting to that point in today’s NFL.
Fans had seen enough as well, and they let the refs have it on social media. If you ask me, it was all well-deserved:
