Five months ago, the Carolina Panthers traded for Baker Mayfield. He would go on to win the starting job and it seemed like he would turn the corner in his career after the Browns gave up on him.
However, on Monday, the Carolina Panthers released quarterback Baker Mayfield after he requested his release after being informed he would be the third quarterback on the depth chart behind Sam Darnold and PJ Walker.
He went 1-4 as the starter before an ankle injury sidelined him for a week and lost the starting job to P.J. Walker. Mayfield didn’t see action again until Week 9 before starting again in Week 11. He then lost his job again to Sam Darnold.
In the midst of his release, social media seems to have uncovered a burner account that allegedly belongs to the former No. 1 overall draft pick.
Mayfield threw for 1,313 yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions in seven appearances (six starts) for the Panthers this season.
Releasing Mayfield locks in Cleveland’s compensation as a fifth-round pick rather than a potential fourth-rounder.

Releasing Mayfield with only five weeks remaining in the regular season was not an accidend as the San Francisco 49ers lost Jimmy Garoppolo for the season to a foot injury Sunday, and the Baltimore Ravens are likely looking at a few weeks without Lamar Jackson because of a knee injury.
With the Panthers out of playoff contention and Mayfield not part of the team’s future, Carolina released the 2018 No. 1 overall pick to allow him to pursue a chance with a playoff contender.
