Pro Football Hall of Famer and FOX Sports analyst Shannon Sharpe has revealed his current pick for the 2022 NFL MVP award winner.
On Friday’s edition of Undisputed, Sharpe offered praise for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, who paced the team to its eighth straight win to open the season against the Houston Texans on Thursday night.
But Sharpe believes that at this point, the MVP award is Josh Allen’s “to lose”, citing his big comeback wins on the road against the Baltimore Ravens (Week 4) and Kansas City Chiefs (Week 6).
Sharpe added “At the end of the day, it’s about numbers.” The three-time Super Bowl champion has Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs second on his list, followed by Hurts.
The 26-year-old has a 65.5 completion percentage for 2,198 yards, 19 touchdowns and just six interceptions to go along with 306 rushing yards and two rushing scores.
Only Joe Burrow and Tom Brady have more passing yards than Allen, but the Buffalo Bills superstar has played one less game. Allen leads the league in passing yards per game (314.0), and only Mahomes is ahead of Allen in TD passes (20).

Mahomes is also having an MVP-like season, completing 66.9 percent of pass attempts for 2,159 yards and 20 touchdowns against five picks. Hurts has a 68.2 completion percentage for 2,042 yards and 12 touchdowns against only two interceptions along with 326 rushing yards and six rushing scores.
Hurts and the Eagles may be the only undefeated team in football right now, but Allen’s passing numbers have been considerably better up to this point. And at the end of the day, the MVP almost always goes to the quarterback with the best stats as long as their team is among the NFL’s best.
Brady led the NFL in passing yards and passing touchdowns last season, but the MVP went to Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers. The latter had a superior quarterback rating and only seven interceptions on the year, plus he led the Pack to the top seed in the NFC. Of course, one could easily make a case that Brady deserved the MVP honors more.
At any rate, the 2022 MVP award race appears to be down to Allen, Hurts and Mahomes at the midway point. But if the season ended today, one has to think it would likely go to Allen.
