Former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones is preparing to enter into his third season in the NFL with the New England Patriots after being a first-round selection in the 2021 draft. However, his status with the team seems to be up in the air after a recent report.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk stated head coach Bill Belichick was actively shopping Jones during the 2023 free agency. There’s no telling exactly where Jones could end up, or if any teams have expressed strong interest in the young quarterback.
On Wednesday’s edition of Undisputed, FOX’s Shannon Sharpe stated that Jones should ask for a trade given the recent news of Bill Belichick trying to shop him to other teams. He added that between reports and the team’s refusal to give him proper coaching on offense, Jones should want out.
“If I’m Mac Jones I’m staying there for what? To be belittled, I’m not winning and you’re not putting me in a position where I can succeed,” Sharpe concluded.
Last week, NBC Sports Boston’s Tom Curran reported that Jones’s decision to seek outside help last season angered Bill Belichick. It appears the head coach might still be upset enough to get rid of him for his actions.
Jones took a step back in nearly every statistical category last year as the Patriots’ offense struggled under Joe Judge and Matt Patricia. In response, the team went out and got a familiar face in Bill O’Brien and had him hired as the offensive coordinator, the same job he had before he left to be the head coach of the Houston Texans. After being fired from there, he would head to the college ranks to be on the coaching staff with the Alabama Crimson Tide.
