Shannon Sharpe once saw the potential in Baker Mayfield. Now, he’s on the opposite side of the coin. Baker Mayfield’s tenure with the Cleveland Browns has been a roller coaster ride. Unfortunately, it could be coming to an end sooner rather than later. The front office traded for Deshaun Watson, sealing Mayfield’s fate with the franchise.
Mayfield and his camp requested a trade soon after finding out the team pursued Watson but failed to get anything done. That forced the team to make their offer better and eventually get him to drop his no-trade clause for them.
Which team would trade for the 2018 No. 1 overall pick? Shannon Sharpe says not many. In fact, he doesn’t think anybody wants the QB.
In a recent episode of UNDISPUTED with Skip and Shannon, Sharpe weighed in on Mayfield’s future for 2022 and beyond.
“Nobody willing to trade a fifth-round pick?” asked Sharpe. “You won’t give up a fifth, sixth or seventh-rounder? Don’t nobody want [Baker Mayfield]. It’s hard, but it’s true. Sad, but fair.”
Sharpe went on to suggest that Baker hasn’t lived up to his potential, which is why he’s out of the job.

Baker Mayfield had an up-and-down first four seasons in the NFL. He looked solid as a rookie, throwing for 3,725 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He took a step back in year two, then bounced back in 2020, when he led the Browns to the playoffs and a victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Unfortunately for him, drama with Odell Beckham Jr., injuries, and inconsistency plagued him in 2021. Cleveland clearly believed Deshaun Watson was a significantly better option, despite his off-the-field issues.
