The rivalry between two of the AFC’s true powerhouses is heating up as we approach the start of the 2023 season, and this latest move is just the latest bit of fuel to the fire.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Buffalo Bills plan to sign former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Shane Buechele to their practice squad.
Buechele signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2021. The former Texas and SMU quarterback hasn’t taken a snap in a meaningful contest, but that doesn’t mean this signing isn’t a significant one in the Chiefs-Bills rivalry.
By having a former Chiefs quarterback on their roster, the Bills can now gain some extra insight into the Chiefs’ offense, as Buechele should be familiar with much of what Andy Reid is doing in Kansas City. Of course, that doesn’t mean their defense is suddenly going to shut the Chiefs’ offense down in 2023. Knowing the Chiefs’ playbook is one thing, but actually shutting down Patrck Mahomes in game action is a completely different story.
As for Buechele himself, he’ll likely slot in as the third-strong quarterback for the Bills, behind Josh Allen and Kyle Allen — as former third-stringer Matt Barkley currently finds himself on the IR.
