Headed into the 2022 NFL season, it was widely assumed that the Seattle Seahawks would play out this season with Geno Smith and Drew Lock under center, then use one of their first-round picks in 2023 on one of the highly-touted QB draft prospects that are expected to be available.
Fast forward to the midway point of this season, and it looks like the Seahawks’ plans have changed.
With Geno Smith in the midst of an MVP caliber season, it is now being reported that Seattle plans to begin contract talks with the quarterback after the season, with the intention of extending him and making him their long-term starter.
Based on how Smith has played through the first nine weeks of the season, this news should come as no surprise. While the 2023 quarterback draft class may be enticing, it would be tough to move on from a guy who they are currently having a ton of success with, in favor of a younger signal-caller who’s more of an unknown.
On the other hand, we are talking about a team that signed Matt Flynn to a monster contract during the 2012 offseason, only to hand over the reins to a third-round rookie by the name of Russell Wilson before week one.
At the moment, keeping Smith seems like the logical choice… Just remember that a lot can change between now and the offseason.
