NFL fans hoping to see Sean Payton back on the sidelines in 2023 may not want to get their hopes up too high.
Payton has interviewed with the Denver Broncos and is scheduled to meet with the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday. But according to a new report from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, there’s actually a growing chance that Payton opts to continue his analyst role at FOX Sports in 2023.
Garafolo noted that Payton isn’t “desperate” to the point where he would take any opening, and that it must “be the right situation on both sides.” Garafolo added that Payton may simply decide to look at his coaching options next year.
Payton coached the New Orleans Saints from 2006 to 2021 (he was suspended for the entire 2012 season because of the Bountygate scandal). Payton led the Saints to a Super Bowl 44 championship, seven NFC South division titles and nine postseason wins.
The Broncos fired head coach Nathaniel Hackett following a blowout loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 16. Arizona fired Kliff Kingsbury after a disappointing four-win season, less than a year after he received a contract extension through 2026.
