The Sean Payton Sweepstakes is still going strong, but it appears as though a clear frontrunner is emerging for the former New Orleans Saints head coach.
Payton has interviewed with the Houston Texans already, and he has interviews lined up with the Carolina Panthers and the Arizona Cardinals this week. But it is the Denver Broncos who appear to have taken an early lead in the battle for his services, as they have already met Sean once. And that interview went so well that the two sides have already scheduled a second meeting with one another.
According to Nola.com’s Jeff Duncan, Payton will meet for a second time with the Broncos this week, and they are beginning to look like the favorites to acquire the highly-coveted head coach from the Saints.
Of course, this is far from done, as the Panthers and Cardinals are also expected to garner some serious consideration from Payton. Both are still in the process of conducting their first interviews with the 59-year-old, so there’s always the chance that Payton likes what he hears and shifts his focus away from the Broncos and towards one of his other suitors.
And then there’s the whole process of putting together a package for Payton that the Saints will be willing to accept. Do the Broncos have the goods, despite not even owning their own first-round pick in 2023?
Apparently, they do, or else it’s unlikely the Saints would have granted them permission to even speak with their former head coach.

The point is, there are still a lot of factors that could come into play as Sean Payton narrows down the field and makes a decision. The Broncos may be the frontrunners at the moment, but a lot can change between now and the end of this week. Stay tuned!
