There are a number of NFL teams with head coaching vacancies right now who would love to hire former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton. But will any of them be willing to meet the Saints’ asking price?
Many have speculated exactly what it’ll cost any team who wants to acquire Payton as their next head coach, as the 59-year-old is still under contract with his former team.
Now, it appears as though we have an exact price from the man himself.
Appearing on “The Herd” today, Payton told Colin Cowherd that Saints general manager Mickey Loomis is looking for a “mid-to-late first-round pick” in exchange for his services. That price could change, however, depending on the team, as it’s expected the Saints will want more if they’re trading him to a division rival like the Carolina Panthers.
The Broncos, Cardinals and Texans have already lined up interviews to speak with Payton regarding their head coaching positions. As have the aforementioned Panthers.
The Texans currently own the no. 2 and 12 picks of the 2023 NFL Draft, while the Cardinals are set to pick right after them in the no. 3 spot.

The Broncos traded away their own first-round pick (fifth-overall) to the Seahawks for Russell Wilson last offseason, but they do own the 49ers’ first round pick.
As for the Panthers, they own the ninth-overall pick, and it’s likely that the Saints would accept nothing less in order to move their prized former coach within the division.
