Heading into the 2023 NFL season, everyone wondered how things would work out between Russell Wilson and new Broncos head coach Sean Payton.
Just two weeks, the team is 0-2 and it looks like Payton is already growing frustrated with his starting quarterback.
Following the Broncos’ loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday, Payton sounded off on his team and he seemed to emphasize Wilson’s play while voicing his displeasure with his offense’s execution.
“Russ has got to be sharper with getting the play out,” the Broncos head coach told reporters after the game. “If we need to wristband it, we will.”
“There was a number of drives where we’re late with personnel, getting out of the huddle we took a while. I mean, it’s got to change. We had burned timeouts in the first half, and I’m not used to doing. We gotta be better. I gotta be better. Russ has got to be sharper with getting the play out, and then we gotta look at how much we have in. But you know, if we need to wristband it, we will.”
Of course, for those who may not remember, the wristband became a hot topic last season when Pete Carroll took a jab at Russell Wilson for refusing to wear one during his time in Seattle.

Wilson’s numbers were not exactly atrocious on Sunday against Washington. He finished the game completing 18 of his 32 attempts for 308 yards, three touchdowns, along with another 56 yards on the ground. But he also accounted for one interception, a lost fumble and seven sacks — not to mention that 50 yards and one of his touchdowns came on a lucky Hail Mary play as time expired.
For now, Payton is stuck with Russell Wilson and his giant contract, whether he likes it or not. The Broncos’ offense as a whole better get things under control quick, because they’re going to need all the points they can get if they want to keep up with the Miami Dolphins’ offense next week.
