Sean Payton is likely looking to bring a name back into the NFL coaching ranks after being away for many years.
According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, Rex Ryan the legendary defensive mind and former Buffalo Bills head coach interviewed with the Denver Broncos this week.
“A little Sunday morning scoopage: new Broncos head coach Sean Payton interviewed a surprise candidate this week to be his defensive coordinator, ESPN’s Rex Ryan,” he reported on Sunday.
Ryan currently works for ESPN, where he has been since he last coached in the league. Ryan has not coached at all since getting fired as the Bills’ head coach in 2016.
The 60-year-old Ryan was considered one of the best defensive coaches in the game during his own NFL tenure. His greatest success as a coach came with the Baltimore Ravens, as he was their defensive line coach from 1999 to 2004 and their defensive coordinator from 2005 to 2008.
In 2000, the Ravens had arguably the greatest defense in NFL history.
