Odell Beckham Jr. is officially a member of the Los Angeles Rams. But what if we told you that, for a while, it was looked like he was joining the New Orleans Saints.
According to Saints head coach Sean Payton, that’s what things were looking like….right up until the Rams swooped in and secured the former Pro Bowl wideout. While speaking on the Dan Patrick show, Payton claimed that Los Angeles was always OBJ’s first choice. And while, in Payton’s eyes, the Saints seemed to be the front-runners for Beckham at one point, they knew they had no chance once the Rams got involved, which is what happened “midway through the process.”
He would go on to imply that, had the Rams not got involved, Beckham would likely be a Saint right now:
If Beckham was prioritizing the quarterback position when making his free agency decision, it’s hard to believe that the Saints would be on top of his list, considering they’re currently rolling with the likes of Trevor Siemian and Taysom Hill. However, he is from Baton Rouge and played his college ball at LSU.
In the end, the hometown appeal just wasn’t enough for the Saints to overcome their other deficiencies, and OBJ opted for a move to the west coast. Maybe it’s for the best. I’d hate to see what happens to the kicking nets in New Orleans after Siemian misses Beckham on a wide open go route.
