Sean McDermott acknowledged regret on Thursday for crediting the 9/11 hijackers for their coordination during a team meeting back in 2019.
McDermott had cited the hijackers while stressing the importance of communication, but he realized how bad his comments were so he called a second team meeting an hour later to apologize to his players.
He was forced to do so again this week after an article posted on the Substack page of NFL writer Tyler Dunne revealed what McDermott had said at the meeting during training camp in 2019.
He has been under fire over it and it continued on Saturday as the story made it to the Weekend Update portion of Saturday Night Live.
As you can see, it was just a quick joke on the show, but it outlines just how huge this story was if it can make it there.
McDermott emphasized to reporters Thursday that he understands 9/11 was “a horrific event in our country’s history” and mentioned that he “lost a good family friend” in the terrorist attacks.

The Bills, who have made the playoffs five out of the six seasons McDermott has been their head coach, announced in June that the franchise had extended his coaching contract through 2027, calling him one of “their most important leaders within the organization.”
His comments are not enough to get him fired, especially since it happened four years ago.
