Sean Dawkins, a former All-American wide receiver at Cal who played nine seasons in the NFL, has tragically lost his life at a relatively young age. He was 52.
Colts owner Jim Irsay confirmed Dawkins’ passing in a message on social media. “Rest in peace, Sean Dawkins. I am shocked and saddened. My prayers and condolences to Sean’s family,” he said.
The 6-foot-4 athlete played for three seasons at Cal, and helped fuel the Golden Bears to two bowl appearances in 1990 and 1991.
At the end of his collegiate career, he finished with 2,124 yards and 31 touchdowns, the latter of which remains a career record for the program. Dawkins, who is in the Golden Bears’ Hall of Fame, went on to play nine years in the NFL.
The Indianapolis Colts selected him in the first round of the 1993 NFL Draft with the 16th overall pick. Dawkins spent five seasons with the Colts racking up 251 receptions, 3,511 yards, and 12 touchdowns.
His next four years would be spent going from the Saints for one season, to the Seahawks for two and spent his final full season with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

He signed with the Vikings before the 2002 season, but was cut from the team before the season began.
For his career, Dawkins caught 445 passes and 25 touchdowns in the regular season. Dawkins played in five career playoff games, including three in 1995 for the Colts.
