Former Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy has been handed some high praise following his part in helping the Wolverines win a National Championship this year.
McCarthy has declared for the NFL Draft and is set for a career in the pros, with his former coach, Jim Harbaugh, predicting he will be the first QB off the board.
As unlikely as that is to happen, McCarthy has drawn comparisons to one of the best quarterbacks in the league ahead of the draft as an NFL scout has said that he would be as good as Joe Burrow in a pass-first offense.
ESPN’s Matt Miller was on the ‘Matt Barrie Show’ earlier this month when he claimed to have spoken to a scout “who said J.J. McCarthy would be Joe Burrow if he were on a team that threw the ball.”
“There’s a lot of love for J.J. McCarthy among the scouting community,” he continued. “He’s tough as hell. He’s got a big arm. He’s a very good athlete and he’s coachable.”
Miller previously reported that a league executive had compared McCarthy’s skillset to Burrow’s given his toughness, mobility, winning mentality, and his ability to “hit every throw.”

“McCarthy isn’t really allowed to do a lot at Michigan, but he’s so gritty and tough,” an NFC GM was also quoted as saying. “The moxie is through the roof. And he’s a much better all-around passer than he gets credit for.”
McCarthy is part of a healthy QB draft class that includes Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, Michael Penix Jr., and Bo Nix. It will be interesting to see the order they get drafted.
