Saquon Barkley got a deal this offseason, but it’s not the one he was hoping for.
On Tuesday, Barkley and the New York Giants agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth up to $11 million. The deal also includes a $2 million signing bonus. ESPN’s Adam Schefter added his new deal is worth $10.1 million fully guaranteed, including the signing bonus.
Former NFL president and CEO Joe Banner is not a fan of this deal for a huge reason and he called him out on it with his fiery statement on Twitter.
“If Barkley wanted to help RB pay or avoid getting tagged again he made a huge mistake,” Banner wrote. “This will encourage teams to continue to play hardball with RB’s.”
Barkley previously stated he may consider not playing this season amid his stalemate with the team over a long-term contract but he folded rather quickly to get himself in camp alongside his teammates.
The Giants and Barkley did not agree to a deal before the deadline for franchised players to agree to long-term contracts, meaning he would have had to play this season under the $10.091 million franchise tender.

The 26-year-old wasn’t expected at training camp this summer if there wasn’t at least an altered deal. He wasn’t happy with the way the negotiations were being portrayed. He thought the details that were being reported throughout made him look “greedy.”
Last season, Barkley finished fourth in the NFL with a career-high 1,312 rushing yards with 10 touchdowns and tied for the team lead with 57 receptions.
If he has yet another standout season and remains healthy, he just might get that payday next offseason.
