New York Giants superstar running back Saquon Barkley is one of the top names to follow leading up to Tuesday’s 2023 NFL trade deadline.
The Giants were unable to reach an agreement on a long-term extension with their star player ahead of the season. With New York sitting at 2-5 and well out of the playoff race, it only makes sense to trade Barkley as opposed to potentially getting nothing for him if he walks in 2024 free agency.
Barkley would be a tremendous fit for just about any Super Bowl hopeful, but the Kansas City Chiefs especially stand out as a landing spot for the 2018 Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Second-year back Isiah Pacheco (419 rushing yards, three touchdowns in seven games) is on pace for a 1,000-yard season, but Kansas City’s offense would be that much more prolific with Barkley also in the fold.
A healthy Barkley is a top-five running back and arguably a top-10 skill position offensive player. He’s posted a trio of 1,000-yard seasons in New York as their lone star offensive player, but imagine what he could do in a Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce-led offense.
With Barkley in his contract year, the Chiefs shouldn’t have to give up too much to acquire him. GM Brett Veach should offer a conditional 2024 third-round pick that becomes a second if they win the Super Bowl and a 2025 fourth-round pick.

The Chiefs don’t need Barkley to repeat as champions, but a player of his caliber would only increase their chances of defending that Super Bowl title. For the Giants, two draft picks is a fine return for a player who’s likely to leave in 2024 free agency anyway.
