The San Francisco 49ers are working out an old friend and former first-round pick.
Per ESPN’s Field Yates, the 49ers are working out veteran cornerback and former 2014 first-round pick Jason Verrett. This comes one day after the Houston Texans released the 32-year-old Verrett from their practice squad.
Verrett was on the 49ers’ roster from 2019 to 2022. Unfortunately, Verrett’s tenure with the 49ers was largely hampered by a string of injuries.
He missed all but one game in 2019 with an ankle injury, as the 49ers went on to reach the Super Bowl. There, they lost to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs 31-20 following a brutal fourth quarter collapse.
Verrett managed to suit up for 13 games in 2020, but he suffered a season-ending ACL tear in Week 1 of the following year. San Francisco brought him back for 2022, but he also missed the entire year and suffered a torn Achilles just as he was preparing for his season debut.
The 2015 Pro Bowler was signed to the Texans’ practice squad in October, but he never wound up playing a game for them. So now, a finally-healthy Verrett gets another chance to win a championship with the 49ers.
