The San Francisco 49ers are adding a two-time Super Bowl champion and veteran defensive back to their defense for the final stretch run.
Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the 49ers have signed defensive back Logan Ryan, who last played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022. No stranger to big-game appearances, Ryan won Super Bowl 49 and 51 championships with the New England Patriots and helped the Tennessee Titans to a surprise AFC title game berth in 2019.
The 49ers need the extra depth in the secondary after losing superstar safety Talanoa Hufanga for the season with a torn ACL two weeks ago. Ryan, who has experience at both cornerback and safety, should see considerable playing time in Steve Wilks’ defense.
The 32-year-old Ryan spent his first four seasons with the Patriots (2013 to 2016), before signing with the Titans in 2019. Ryan turned out to be one of the few former Patriots standouts who found success after leaving New England, emerging as an instrumental piece of the Tennessee secondary upon arrival in 2017.
Ryan now gets the opportunity to win a third championship ring with a 49ers team that many view as the Super Bowl 58 favorites. The 49ers are coming off a statement 41-19 blowout win on the road over the reigning NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles.
The 49ers host the NFC West rival Seattle Seahawks this Sunday.
