The 49ers are bringing back a familiar face to the team.
Jason Verrett watched his former team from a Levi’s Stadium suite defeat the Seattle Seahawks 28-16 on Sunday. This week, the free-agent cornerback will transition from being a fan to playing for the team as he agreed to rejoin the 49ers and head straight to the practice squad, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.
Having a veteran like Verrett in the building will be valuable and he has been on San Francisco’s radar for several weeks. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has indicated the team was trying to get the veteran CB signed.
Verrett is well over a year removed from the Achilles injury he suffered during a 49ers practice session. That injury halted his comeback from the ACL injury he sustained in Week 1 of the 2021 season. Hopefully, the third time is the charm.
Verrett might provide some insurance for the Niners, who could potentially be without No. 1 cornerback Charvarius Ward, who suffered a groin injury during San Francisco’s victory over Seattle. Not for nothing, the 49ers will have some experience with their depth, knowing that Verrett is capable of playing at a high level when healthy.
He just hasn’t been healthy much at all over his career.

Injuries have plagued Verrett’s NFL career, with his only healthy seasons occurring in 2015 and 2020.
The 49ers have options at cornerback, and Verrett will give the team a veteran who is trusted in the locker room.
In 2020, Verrett appeared in 13 games for the 49ers and recorded 60 tackles, two interceptions, and seven passes defended.
The 49ers are now sitting atop the NFC thanks to the Eagles’ loss to the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. Philadelphia’s 33-13 loss in Dallas dropped them to 10-3 for the year, putting San Francisco in a three-way tie for the top spot in the conference.
The job still isn’t done, but if they win out they will be the No. 1 seed.
